I guess, my main frustration stems from the irratic nature of masking in general, and not being able to find a standard approach that works well in all situations. It was very easy to mask effectively.even just with the rather simple NX2 selection control point functions. Ok, it's not an 'optima'l background colour for masking.but I have found it very hard to mask this image well (in order to change the bg to jet-black) with any of the stand alone progs.such as Topaz, Vertus, etc. It was simply a quick/basic image that a client wanted (one of 50 pieces that I shot) for her local art website. Here's a rather simple silver jewelry shot. Perhaps I should just shoot this kind of item against a rich However, when I attempt the same thing with say silver jewelry items.that include a soft variance-range of colour contrast (falloff) from black-ish all the way to white-ish.I find it difficult to obtain "great" results.if I shoot against a black, white, or grey backdrop. For example, with my studio florals.a black background always works well.simply because "black" is not usually present in nature and there is normally (99%) adequate colour/contrast between the subject and background. When I'm shooting an image that I know I will be extracting.(or possibly may do so later on).I obviously use a colour backdrop that will make the subject easier to cut-out, etc.

I'm not hearing from people that any of the stand-alone masking software has reached the point whereby it's now the total solution. If so, copy that channel to a new layer, use the dodge and burn tools to increase the contrast and then apply the same proceduresįrom what I've read lately.the best method path still seems to be with CS4/5, especially with the new CS5 refine features.

blend mode, opacity, masking, etc.), to be done without effecting the layer below.Īnother approach is to look at each of the RGB channels individually as usually, there is one that gives a better definition between the darks and lights. This separate layer also allows for any adjustments (i.e. I usually do this by painting or smudging on a transparent layer so that the original below is visible as a pattern to follow. Once the target has been selected and copied to a separate layer, a mask and a black brush will allow for further adjustments and the clone tool or a hair brush on a new layer can be used to add back any (i.e. Again, I would refine it in quick mask (using a black or white colored brush) before saving it to an alpha channel. head and hair) using the lasso tool and adjust the sliders to get an ‘as close as possible’ selection. Instead of Remask, the same can be done by making a rough selection of the complex area (i.e. To make a complete selection of the subjects, I hold down Ctrl and Shift keys and single click on the two alpha channels so that I now have a marching ant selection that includes both the pen path and Remask outlines.

Before saving this selection to an alpha channel, I refine it with quick mask mode using a black or white brush at various opacities. head and hair usually.), I bring the layer into Topaz Remask and get a marching ant selection using the included brush and slider adjustments. For example, when it is just the subjects that are to be extracted, I will use the pen tool for the hard/defined portions, save this selection to an alpha channel and then clear the pen-path marching ants. Personally, I look at the complexity of the project and then decide which tools to use. I’m not certain that there is ‘a best’ program, one that will do it all regardless. I don't expect any in-depth feedback here.but was hoping that some of you retouching expert dudes.would tell me what YOU think is the best method/route to concentrate my efforts on.

I hear that the new CS5 upgrade has improved masking/extraction capabilities (?) Perhaps I should just sit down for a couple of months and seriously spend the time/effort to really hone in my masking skills, testing all the available options. I do find that Capture NX2 'selection' masking does at times offer a decent alternative solution.altho, as it doesn't actually create a true 'layer-mask'.it can bleed at times, and become visable at 100-200% which is no good for stock images. I find plugins like Topaz Remask 3 and V Fluid Mask, etc., rather irratic and kinda hit n miss with more intricate objects like fine-jewelry, chains, etc.įor my studio floral pics (see sig-links below).it's pretty straightforward and OK/fine, coz flowers mostly tend to be relatively simple to ing standard Photoshop tools, etc. However, I still seem to be somewhat dissapointed with my abilities to get great results with complex and subtle-variants of colour.type subjects. As a studio still-life shooter I do my fair share of extractions.and I try to keep up with the new masking-plugin updates as they become available, etc.
